How does it work
It is a very gentle, yet powerful technique which consists of light moves using thumbs and fingers. This is done over soft tissue at crucial junctions of several muscles, bone, connective tissues and nerve pathways.

Sets of special Bowen moves are used. This involves using fingers and thumbs to make gentle rolling type moves interspersed with short breaks when you are left to rest for a few moments. This is essential so that the body is able to incorporate the work done on it.
This stimulates the body to balance, reset and repair itself.
Because of the gentle nature of the technique it is enjoyed by people who find other forms of therapy aggressive. It works well on babies as well as the old and frail.
As Bowen is a holistic treatment, the practitioner initially treats the whole body.

The moves are performed over muscles and tendons over precise points.

These moves
1. Activates the proprioceptors triggering the tendons and muscles to relax.

2. Moves blood and lymph away from the muscle enabling fresh blood to enter.

3. Improves posture enabling internal organs to return to their correct position and shape hence improving organ function.

4. Affects the Autonomic nervous system. The brain producing alpha waves allowing the body to go into a state of deep relaxation.

Quite often there is no observable change immediately after an initial treatment but the body continues to change over a period of days and weeks.
The number of treatments needed vary depending on the type of client and their presenting problems.
Treatments are initially recommended weekly, and many complaints maybe completely resolved after the first few treatments. Treatments may last upto 1hr 30mins. No other manipulative treatments are to be used within 7 days of receiving Bowen therapy.

What to expect on your first visit
I will take personal details and medical history. We will discuss at length the reason for your visit including detailed history of your injury or pain.
I will then carry out an assessment of posture and range of movement before beginning treatment.
Treatment will be carried out on a couch, standing or sitting on a chair.
The Bowen treatment can be performed on loose light clothes, but it may be beneficial for some moves to be made on skin.

Choosing a practitioner

It is important to choose a qualified Bowen therapist who has undertaken all the necessary training to understand the theory and practice of Bowen therapy.
You can check whether a Bowen therapist is registered with the Complementary & Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC) by searching the register at www.cnhc.org.uk. By choosing Bowen therapists registered with the CNHC you can be confident that they are properly trained, qualified and insured.
